Toyota's EPU concept from 2023 could preview a brand-new compact ute.

Toyota's EPU concept from 2023 could preview a brand-new compact ute.

Toyota has reportedly revealed plans for a compact ute, set to launch in Brazil and other markets in 2027.

The upcoming model, said to be built on an upgraded version of Toyota’s TNGA platform, will offer hybrid powertrain options, including an all-wheel-drive (AWD) variant.

The new compact ute is expected to be a production version inspired by the 2023 Toyota EPU concept

While the concept debuted as a fully electric model, its production counterpart will likely feature a hybrid powertrain. This setup may include the advanced 2.5-litre hybrid system seen in the Toyota RAV4, which is compatible with both petrol and ethanol fuels. An AWD configuration will be optional, catering to a wide range of buyers.

Motor1 Argentina reports that this development aligns with Toyota’s US$2.2 billion (around NZ$3.9 billion) investment in South America, announced in March 2024.

The funding is focused on enhancing hybrid and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) systems, alongside upgrading the TNGA platform. This technology will also underpin refreshed versions of the Corolla and Corolla Cross for the Brazilian market.

The ute's design will borrow cues from the EPU concept, which showcased a 5070-mm length and a 3350-mm wheelbase.

Modifications will ensure compatibility with its new unibody construction. Additionally, the innovative bed design, which expands for greater utility, could make its way to the production model.

Positioned below the Toyota Hilux, the compact ute will compete against the Ford Maverick and Chevrolet Montana in South America. Other manufacturers, including the embattled Nissan as well as Renault and Volkswagen, are also planning entries in this growing segment.

While the 2027 compact ute has been greenlit for Brazil, Toyota has not yet confirmed if it will reach markets like New Zealand or Australia in a right-hand-drive (RHD) configuration.

Toyota’s move reflects the rising demand for smaller, fuel-efficient utes, and this new model could become a significant player in both emerging and developed markets.
