Kiwis love their utes. Whether it’s due to our rural roots, their versatility, or because they reflect New Zealand’s “DIY” attitude, the trusty ute has an avid fan base.
So the release of the 2024 Mitsubishi Triton line-up has caused ute enthusiasts’ ears to prick up. The Next Generation Triton VRX 4WD promises a blend of performance and advanced technology - but does it hold up in real-world conditions? Let’s test drive and find out!
The following test drive was undertaken by Milutin Kovacevic, an experienced ute driver. Here is his assessment.
With five years of driving utes under my belt, I’ve come to appreciate what makes a great vehicle in this category. Utes have always been my go-to for their safety during commutes and off-road capabilities, crucial for my fishing and camping adventures. However, they often lack the luxury features found in high-end SUVs. The new Mitsubishi Triton VRX looks to change that.
I noticed the luxurious touch points the moment I settled into the leather driver's seat. The electric seat adjustment, telescopic steering wheel, and customisable rear-view mirror made it easy to find my perfect driving position.
As I drove away from the Simon Lucas Mitsubishi dealership, I was pleasantly surprised to see my phone begin charging automatically in the wireless charging slot - just one of the many premium additions that set the Triton VRX apart. The seat and steering wheel warmers heated up almost instantly, another luxurious comfort I was happy to have on this chilly morning.
The salesperson riding with me detailed the VRX’s extensive features as we drove, and I tested them one by one. The attention to detail in this model is impressive. The Triton’s steering wheel houses most of the driving and multimedia controls, including an effective “push to talk” function compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay via Siri - incredibly convenient.
The Triton VRX also boasts various drive modes for both 2WD and 4x4 settings, including snow, gravel, mud, and sand options. While I didn’t take it off-road, these modes and a rear diff-lock feature suggest it’s ready for any terrain.
After a substantial drive, I handed over the wheel to the salesperson and moved to the back seat to assess its comfort – a common pain point in many utes. Unlike others, the Triton’s rear seats are slightly reclined, offering a more natural sitting position. Individual climate control for the back seat, an armrest, and ISOFIX mounts for a baby seat further enhance its family-friendly appeal.
In summary, the new Mitsubishi Triton VRX combines the rugged functionality of a ute with the luxury features of a high-end SUV. It’s a vehicle that completely exceeds my expectations in both utility and comfort.
