VW’s most affordable EV is coming in 2027.

VW’s most affordable EV is coming in 2027.

Volkswagen has revealed the ID. Every1, a concept car previewing its most affordable all-electric model set to launch in 2027.

The production version is expected to start at around €20,000 (currently below NZ$38,000), positioning it in the increasingly competitive entry-level electric vehicle (EV) market.

Subcompact EV for urban mobility

Sized at 3880 mm long, the ID. Every1 sits between the now-discontinued up! (3600mm) and the Polo (4074mm).

Volkswagen claims the interior space will match the Polo’s, while the 305L luggage compartment offers a practical balance between its combustion-engine predecessors.

Built on Volkswagen’s new front-wheel-drive MEB platform, the ID. Every1 is powered by a compact 70kW electric motor, delivering a top speed of 130km/h.

While acceleration figures are unconfirmed, its lightweight setup should make for agile city driving.

The estimated range is at least 250km, suggesting a battery size below 40kWh to keep costs down.

A more confident and robust design

Volkswagen has reworked its design language for the ID. Every1, giving it a more muscular stance compared to earlier ID models

The front fascia features a distinct 'eye mask' design reminiscent of recent models from Ford and Suzuki, but it integrates well with the vehicle’s smooth bodywork.

The black glass rear hatch is a nod to the up! while broader fenders and chiselled bumper details contribute to a more solid, planted look.

Inside, the dashboard layout prioritises functionality and simplicity. Unlike recent ID models that leaned heavily on touch controls, the ID. Every1 reintroduces physical buttons on the steering wheel and dashboard, alongside a large central touchscreen running Volkswagen’s latest software.

The front passenger area features a utility rail for mounting accessories, and the centre console offers modular storage options.

Volkswagen’s urban EV strategy

The ID. Every1 is just one component of Volkswagen’s upcoming “Electric Urban Car Family.”

The ID. 2all, another front-wheel-drive EV, arrives in 2026 at a slightly higher price point of €25,000 (around NZ$47,000).

By 2027, Volkswagen aims to introduce nine new models, including multiple budget-friendly cars tailored for urban environments.

Volkswagen CEO Thomas Schafer sees this as a major step toward mass-market electrification, stating, “The ID. Every1 is the last piece of the puzzle on our journey to having the widest model selection in the volume segment.”

With competitors already pushing into the affordable EV market, Volkswagen’s success will depend on balancing cost, range and usability.

A more detailed look at the ID. Every1’s production version is expected in late 2025, with additional small EVs from Volkswagen Group brands to follow in the coming months.
