One of 19 Ferrari F40 LMs heads to Monterey auction.

  • This Ferrari F40 LM is one of 19 units built by Michelotto for international GT racing.
  • The GTC-spec model produces 567kW and weighs 317kg less than the standard F40.
  • RM Sotheby’s expects the car to sell for up US$9.5 million (NZ$15.7 million).

The Ferrari F40 is already the stuff of legend, but one ultra-rare, race-ready LM version is gunning for mythic status (and an eyewatering price tag) at Monterey Car Week this August.

Lighter, louder, and far more lethal

This isn’t your standard F40. One of just 19 LM models ever built by Michelotto, chassis #95448 was originally destined for the American IMSA and European FIA-GT circuits.

Developed to GTC specification, it’s the most powerful variant of the bunch. The vehicle's 2.9-litre twin-turbo V8 now produces a colossal 567kW. That’s nearly 216kW more than the standard F40, paired with a dramatic weight drop of 317kg. Fully fuelled, it tips the scales at a lean 1050kg.

With pedigree like this, who needs provenance?

Delivered new to a collector in St. Moritz, Switzerland, this F40 LM has lived an unusually eventful life for such a unicorn. Its original owner, Walter Hagmann, sold and later repurchased it before finally parting ways in 2007.

Since then, it’s torn through tracks across Italy, France, Spain and the Czech Republic, before getting a full engine and gearbox overhaul by Michelotto in 2014 and a fresh coat of Rosso Corsa to match.

Ownership has since passed through hands in Las Vegas, Germany and Austria. Most recently, the car’s been serviced ahead of auction with new fuel bladders, timing and accessory belts, spark plugs, filters and a fresh set of Michelin Pilot Sport GT Slick S7M tyres.

Motorsport madness

RM Sotheby’s expects this Ferrari F40 LM to hammer somewhere between US$8.5 and 9.5 million (around NZ$14.1 to 15.7 million). That’s steep, but for a race-bred Ferrari with this level of rarity, power and provenance, bidders won’t need much convincing.

If it sells within that range, it’ll be among the most valuable F40s ever to change hands. And for the lucky new owner? Just don’t expect your accountant to be nearly as thrilled.
