Hyundai's latest entry into the all-important SUV game has surfaced in Korea; the 2019 Santa Fe.
The Korean marque teased the new machine last week, via the release of early sketches. And in the flesh, most of the design cues have been translated into the real.
As forecast, the Santa Fe's styling leans heavily on that of the new Kona — most notably in the slimmed down headlights, cascading primary grill, and overall aggression up front. Vents that flank the main grill aren't so aggressive in real life application, but nonetheless make an appearance. The leading distinction to the Kona is the inclusion of a silver character trim piece that wraps around the top of the grill and the headlights, giving the car a more grown-up look than the Kona.
It also looks like a moustache, if you start at it for long enough.
It measures up at approximately 70mm longer and 10mm wider than the current-model Santa Fe. It has a longer wheelbase as well, which will help create more space inside.
Speaking of, the other photo that's been released so far is a snap of the interior, and it looks like a step up from the current model's set-up. Hyundai have claimed that the space will feature "premium quality and class-leading roominess", and they back this up with a bevy of features.
MirrorLink, Apple CarPlay, wireless smartphone charging, and voice recognition are among the main toys. It also appears according to the early photo, that the speedometer could be partially digital — as is all the rage in 2018.
Engine options are yet to be formally confirmed, but it's been reported that there will be three available in South Korea; a 2.0-litre petrol, a 2.0-litre diesel, and a 2.2-litre diesel. In all-wheel drive models, these will be linked to an HTRAC system with active controls for the driver.
It might sound like a bit of a joke to talk about off-road capability with a vehicle like this one, but don't underrate just how handy they can be in challenging terrain. Kia recently took a Sorento to Moab, and produced stunning results on some of the most difficult trails.
Further details are thin on the ground, but expect them to be released in full next month when the new Santa Fe debuts at the Geneva Motor Show.
