Hollywood hulk on cusp of new TV show about cops, cars, and chases
Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson will be bringing the kind of turbocharged action made famous by the Fast and Furious film franchise to television screens worldwide, but, this will not be a spin-off featuring the old mate Vin Diesel and his crew of colorful rebels.
Instead, the show will be called Boost Unit. It will center around an LAPD unit that specialize in car-related crimes, operating undercover with their own cars in a plot which shares resemblance with the script from the second installment of the Furious franchise, where Bryan O'Conner — played by the late Paul Walker — penetrated a crime ring by being, you guessed it, a driver for an undercover police unit. But despite the similarities, the program has been confirmed to not be a spin-off from the film franchise.
Johnson will be one of the show's executive producers via his Seven Bucks Productions company, working alongside Dany Garcia (executive producer of Johnson's Ballers TV show), with relative newcomers Jonny Umansky and Zach Hyatt. Don't expect the show to appear on Kiwi screens — or any screens, for that matter — any time soon, as the team are still yet to complete the pilot of the show; let alone get approval to make more.
The Fast and Furious superpower has become a darling of the action film world, following comprehensive positive response from movie-goers and critics alike over their last three titles — the seventh and most recent installment, Furious 7, garnering the largest response thanks to an emotional tribute to Walker within the film.
As insane and primitively scripted as the Furious films are, we love them. If this program is half as good, rest assured that we'll be tuning in ...
