One-of-two 1967 Zagato-bodied Mustangs now listed for auction.

One-of-two 1967 Zagato-bodied Mustangs now listed for auction.

  • Only two 1967 Ford Mustang GT Zagato Elaborazione units were built, with one now listed for auction.
  • The vehicle retains its original 4.7-litre V8 engine and manual gearbox with around 202kW.
  • It features Zagato-designed bodywork, Holly Green paint, and historic certification following a 2019 restoration.

In a move that would make purists blink and design fans cheer, the ultra-rare 1967 Ford Mustang GT Zagato Elaborazione is looking for a new owner. Just two of these Italian coach-built ponies were ever made - and one has popped up for auction on Bring a Trailer.

Carrozzeria Zagato, the Milan-based design house better known for sleek Alfa Romeos and eccentric Aston Martins, is behind this unlikely transatlantic experiment.

While the firm has recently drawn attention for its work on a wild BMW M4 under the Bovensiepen nameplate, this Mustang is a throwback to a much earlier curiosity. And yes, this one’s road-legal.

Certified green (and not just the paint)

Originally a Wimbledon White GT, this 1967 Mustang underwent its Italian transformation with a full front-end redesign: narrower grille, smoother valance, rectangular Carello headlights and relocated turn signals above a reworked bumper.

A bonnet scoop and Zagato badges on the fenders complete the look, finished in Holly Green, as required for Italian historic certification.

Inside, white-trimmed bucket seats with black inserts add to the vintage charm. You’ll also find an AM radio, rear C-pillar vents and period-style air conditioning. Mileage is technically unknown, though the odometer reads just 502km, which may not reflect actual use.

Still powered by its original 4.7-litre Challenger Special V8 with a four-barrel carb and stainless headers, the GT sends power through a 4-speed manual. While figures aren't confirmed, the setup should deliver around 202kW and 423Nm.

The car took part in the Mille Miglia in 2021, one of the world’s most storied classic events. It sits today on 14-inch steel wheels with ageing whitewall tyres that could use refreshing.

The auction closes in three days, with bidding currently at €31,000 (about NZ$60,500). For the collector who wants one-of-two (and not the one in a museum), it doesn’t get much rarer than this.
