Days after announcing that the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance plan to produce 12 new electric models before 2022, the first Mitsubishi model looks set to break cover at next month's Tokyo Motor Show, and it will wear one of the brands most famous nameplates.
Almost a year to the day since the last Lancer Evolution was sold at auction, Mitsubishi will revive the Evo lineage with 'an all-new flagship concept car' - the Mitsubishi e-Volution.
The new concept will be built on an all-new platform with a full-electric powertrain, four-wheel drive and 'artificial intelligence technology.'
The e-Volution concept will also be built in a new bodystyle. Rather than the traditional sedan, the concept appears to be a low-slung SUV coupe.
The first image released by Mitsubishi also suggests that the e-Volution will have a much higher ride height than any previous Evo model.
Mitsubishi have kept the finer details of the e-Volution concept under wraps until it's public debut sometime between 25 October and 5 November.
However, with a drastic shift away from the now defunct Evolution mantra of a road-going rally-derived sedan, Mitsubishi has acknowledge that the concept is a step into a new future.
They say the e-Volution concept is a 'beacon for renewed ambition' for the brand, and go on to describe the concept's reveal as, 'a true milestone event where the corporation will wave the flag under new circumstances to usher a new era of long term growth and sustainable development, returning to where it belongs to better embrace the future.'
Mitsubishi will be able to gauge public reaction to the new Evo in just over one months time.
