Whether you like them, lump them, or continually make gags at their expense, you've got to respect the longevity and legacy of the Ford Mustang.

The eternal pony car continues to kick on, with interest in Australia and New Zealand as high as it's ever been before by virtue of it finally being produced in right-hand drive.

But it isn't just Australasia that have recently fostered a new-found level of respect for the Mustang, as evidenced by newly released figures from Ford.

The manufacturer have confirmed that, for the fourth year in a row, the Mustang has sold in greater numbers around the world than any other sports coupe.

“We broke the mould when Ford launched the Mustang 55 years ago,” said Ford president of global markets Jim Farley.

“Nothing says freedom, the wind in your hair and the joy of driving like Mustang; it’s an icon. The roar of its V8 on a spring day, there’s nothing better. No wonder it’s the most popular sports coupe in the world.”

According for Ford's numbers, over half a million sixth-generation Mustangs have sold worldwide since 2015.

In 2018 alone, they reportedly sold 113,066 units. No less than 75,842 of those were American sales, with a handy 2,323 selling in the United Kingdom.
