We’ll admit we were a little late getting to the latest Tesla Model 3 sedan, aka “Highland” if you’re a brand-obsessive. Because it was more of a 2024 model for Kiwi customers, paving the way for the refreshed/related Model Y SUV (sorry, “Juniper”).
A couple of things refocused our attention on the Model 3 this year. First was the launch of that Model Y, because it reintroduced us to so many of the technology and design changes made to the Model 3. Second was Tesla’s new Full Self Driving (Supervised) technology, which went live in September.
The Model 3 stands strong as a passenger car in its own right: it’s good to drive and represents a lot of EV technology for the money – especially in the entry-level RWD format we reviewed this year.
But the introduction of Full Self Driving (Supervised) means the Model 3 and Model Y are also the vehicles for a watershed moment in Kiwi motoring.
FSD (Supervised) is an expensive option, granted: $11,400. But make no mistake, despite the “Supervised” bit in the name that requires you to remain ready to take control, it’s autonomous and very capable in some surprisingly tricky scenarios. If you don’t fancy handing over $11k up front, there’s also a subscription available for $159 per month.
Runners up: Cupra Leon, Suzuki Swift (2024 winner).
