The motoring world appears to be moving closer and closer to a place where EVs will reign supreme, and being able to drive yourself will get superseded by autonomous technology.
It's even had an impact on what was once considered 'safe ground' — the humble classic car.
Yes, they're going after those too; underlined earlier this year when Jaguar unveiled their electric-conversion for the beloved E-Type. Some of course will consider this a positive (electricity pun ... intended?), with it sure to extend the lifespan, usability, and relevance of these cars.
But for everyone else, perhaps Porsche's much more mild injection of modernity is the way to go.
The German marque have confirmed that they will roll out a new tracking system specifically for their older models, helping protect them from thieves and wayward family members pondering taking uncle Nile's Porsche for a cheeky little joyride.
“In future, the new Porsche Classic Vehicle Tracking System will allow us to offer our customers anti-theft functionality that will trigger an alarm if someone tries to steal the vehicle,” Porsche Classic's Alexander Fabig said.
“In an ideal scenario, this intervention will stop the vehicle from disappearing right from the outset.”
The system itself is built to alert car owners as well as Porsche themselves that their car has been nicked. Once the owner gives the system a green light, it will then contact local authorities with the car's location.
Icing on the cake is the ability to shut off the engines of stolen cars remotely, and also the nifty feature of calibrating speed limits for guest drivers hoping to give the car a hearty thrash.
The system comes out next year, although there's no word yet on whether Porsche can fit it to my crappy old Lexus.
