Ford orders extra supplies as queue forms to buy US Classic set up for Kiwi roads

The first right-hand drive Ford Mustangs destined for New Zealand are being made in the United States, and are expected to arrive in November.

Already 425 buyers have confirmed their orders for the new car, which has never before been available in New Zealand in right-hand-drive.

Ford New Zealand says it has secured extra supplies of the cars to meet the greater than expected demand in this country.

The vehicles are being assembled at Ford’s Flatrock assembly plant, in Michigan.

“With the vehicles starting the journey down the production line we are that much closer to bringing the icon that is the Ford Mustang to New Zealand roads,” said the managing director of Ford New Zealand, Corey Holter.

“It’s certainly great to see such a positive response to the Mustang here in New Zealand.”
New Zealand had one of the strongest followings of the Mustang outside the United States, and this was reflected in the build-up of orders for the new cars. From an initial order bank of 300 in May, 425 New Zealand buyers had now confirmed they would buy the cars.

The Mustang Fastback and Convertible were available in the muscle car’s V8 performance version, and the first EcoBoost engine would provide the power of a bigger engine in a smaller, more fuel efficient package.

The Mustang has a recommended retail price starting at $56,990 for the six-speed automatic transmission Fastback, with the 2.3-litre EcoBoost engine.

The top of the range model was the six-speed automatic GT 5-litre V8 Convertible, with a RRP of $76,990.
Ford said that around the world and in New Zealand, “race red” was the most popular colour choice, although “magnetic” was now only four vehicles behind.

New Zealand’s third colour preference remained “ruby red”, followed by “deep impact blue”. “Shadow black” had overshadowed “Oxford white” to take fifth place.
