Kiwi Supercars champion Shane van Gisbergen has given Red Bull Formula 1 star Max Verstappen time behind the wheel of his Holden at the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne.

Verstappen, who won his first Formula 1 race in 2016, is considered a future world champion.

The Dutchman spent some time looking over the Red Bull Holden Racing Team car in between commitments at Albert Park on Thursday and looked right at home behind the wheel.

Speaking to Supercars.com, van Gisbergen was impressed by Verstappen's knowledge of the racing series.

“It was cool that he knew a lot about our series and watches the races from time to time, said van Gisbergen”

“He was genuinely interested in our cars and was keen to learn what the cars are like."

“He asked if I left-foot braked and I said that I couldn’t but I heel-and-toe."

“He had a funny look on his face and said he’d never done that in his life!"

“We have very different upbringings, he’s a bit of a Playstation kid, but he’s clearly a massive talent."

“He was asking all the questions and is obviously pretty keen to drive one."

“Maybe one day he can have a skid of the Sandman or even the race car.”

Van Gisbergen, who dominated the opening Supercars round on the streets of Adelaide, has been over-shadowed by Shell V Power Racing duo of fellow Kiwis Fabian Coulthard and Scott McLaughlin in yesterday's four qualifying sessions.

Verstappen will get on track for the first time today as the Formula 1 season officially begins.
