  • Two decades, 4 generations of Suzuki Swift have hit 10 million sales.
  • The biggest single market by far is India.
  • Yes, there were Swifts in the 1980s; we don't talk about those.

The Suzuki Swift has hit accumulated global sales of 10 million, 20 years and 8 months after its launch in November 2004.

Swift Sport (pictured here in 2nd and 3rd-gen models) is an enthusiast favourite.

That's the Swift as we know it today, of course: the stylish small hatch with the big eyes and "floating roof" with blacked-out A-pillars. Suzuki has in fact used the Swift name since 1984 on small cars, but it rebooted the brand in 2004 with the new model that was intended to be a "global strategic car".

The first generation lasted for 6 years. The second was launched in 2010, the 3rd in 2017 and the latest 4th-gen model in late-2023 (2024 for most export markets).

Of the 10 million units sold worldwide, 60% have been in India, 14% in Europe, 8% in Japan, and 18% in other countries. It's a consistent top-seller for Suzuki New Zeaand; at the launch of the current model last year, the company claimed it's been the most popular privately purchased vehicle in the country since 2005.

Swift has been produced in various countries over the last two decades: Japan, Hungary, India, China, Pakistan and, since 2022, Ghana.
