New SUV shares platform with Toyota C-HR but adds rugged styling.

New SUV shares platform with Toyota C-HR but adds rugged styling.

  • Subaru Uncharted is available in three trims, including a rare FWD variant with 165kW output.
  • The AWD Sport and GT models deliver 252kW and reach 96km/h in five seconds.
  • All versions use a 74.7kWh battery and support 150kW DC charging.

Subaru’s all-electric Uncharted SUV has made its debut in the US, bringing with it the brand’s first front-wheel drive model in years - alongside two punchier all-wheel drive siblings with serious pace.

Front-drive with flair?

While the Uncharted might ride on Toyota’s e-TNGA platform (shared with the all-electric C-HR+), Subaru has gone for a more trail-capable design. Think beefier bumpers, chunkier lighting and low-profile roof rails. It’s more rugged than the Solterra and smaller, too - filling a niche for adventurous urbanites who don’t want to go with a larger SUV.

The big surprise? The base “Premium FWD” trim sends power solely to the front wheels. Rated at 165kW, it’s good for over 490km on a single charge, though Subaru says it’ll only be offered in “limited quantities.” A short run, perhaps, to test the waters.

AWD variants pack WRX-beating punch

Where things really get interesting is with the dual-motor Sport and GT models. These unleash a spirited 252kW and manage 0 to 96 km/h in just five seconds - quicker than the current WRX. Range drops slightly to 467km, but performance gains more than make up for it.

Subaru promises “impressive straight-line stability, handling, and grip on loose surfaces,” and with Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and X-Mode onboard, that’s no hollow boast. Buyers can choose between 18- and 20-inch wheels for extra flair or clearance.

Toyota inside, Subaru outside

Inside, the Uncharted borrows heavily from the Toyota C-HR+, with a 14-inch infotainment screen, digital cluster, and (less flatteringly) a questionable steering wheel design.

The Sport variant gets practical touches like a heated steering wheel and water-repellent trim, while the GT adds more indulgence: ventilated front seats, a panoramic moonroof, and a Harman Kardon sound system.

Charging is handled via a NACS port across the board, supporting up to 150 kW DC fast charging and an 11 kW AC onboard charger. With preconditioning built in, Subaru says you can juice up from 10 to 80% in just 30 minutes.

Subaru of New Zealand has not disclosed local availability just yet. Its Toyota C-HR+ sibling is similarly uncertain for the Kiwi market.
