The annual Tokyo Auto Salon, set to run from January 10 to 12 at Makuhari Messe, remains a cornerstone of Japanese car culture.

Known for setting trends and showcasing innovation, this year's event will highlight three standout custom builds crafted by students from Nissan Automobile Technical College.

These creations not only celebrate Nissan's rich automotive heritage but also demonstrate the next generation of talent in automotive design and engineering.

Developed over six months by fourth-year students at Nissan Kyoto Automobile Technical College's Auto Maintenance and Customisation Department, the NEO Skyline draws inspiration from the iconic fourth-generation Skyline C110, affectionately known as the 'Kenmary.'

This nickname originated from a 1970s advertising campaign featuring characters named Ken and Mary.

The NEO Skyline reimagines the spirit of the Kenmary for a contemporary audience, targeting enthusiasts aged 30 to 50. The project embodies the themes of Nostalgia, Encouragement and Originality, blending classic design cues with modern aesthetics.

Finished in a custom 'Tomoaki Blue' paint - a pearl-infused interpretation of the original metallic blue - the car represents "newness amid nostalgia."

Another six-month project from the Kyoto campus, the Z Lealia blends the performance-focused heritage of the Fairlady Z with the practicality of a station wagon.

Built on the M35 Stagea platform, the car integrates design elements from the RZ34 Fairlady Z, including sculpted rear fenders and sleek bodywork.

The Z Lealia caters to driving enthusiasts who want a sports car experience without sacrificing family practicality.

The name combines the English word 'lead' with the Latin 'familia,' symbolising leadership in family-focused driving excitement.

Bluebird Kiwami: ultimate luxury meets classic design

Nissan Bluebird Kiwami

From Nissan Aichi Automobile Technical College, third-year students created the Bluebird Kiwami in just ten weeks as part of their Auto Body Master Course.

Using a PU11 Bluebird Maxima - a luxurious hardtop sedan from the late 1980s - the students aimed to refine every detail of the car's exterior and interior while staying true to Nissan's DNA.

The name 'Kiwami,' meaning 'ultimate' in Japanese, reflects the students' pursuit of perfection. Painted in 'Aurora Flare Blue Pearl,' the car evokes imagery of open skies and the sea, aligning with its theme of freedom and adventure.
