You wouldn't expect religion and Lamborghini to bisect too often. Especially given that the latter did make a car called the Diablo, once upon a time.
But here we are, talking about a Lamborghini owned by the current Pope — Pope Francis — that went up for sale over the weekend.
RM Sotheby's had the supercar for sale at their Monaco sale, and pre-auction speculation expected pricing to fall into the ballpark of $430,000–$600,000. The top end of that guestimate is an already premium price for a supercar that can be bought new today for less than half a mil.
But, the Lambo didn't sell for that ... the gavel dropped with a price of €715,000 (or $1.23million) on the board.
At least it's the rear-wheel drive model, I guess.
Before you go away thinking that the Pope is some kind of supercar-wielding boulevard-cruising badass of high repute, know that this Huracan wasn't exactly a 'daily driver'. The car was gifted to the Pope last year for the purpose of being auctioned off for charity.
As the glowing gold highlights might suggest, it's not a standard Huracan, either. It was created by Ad Personam — Lamborghini's customisation studio — as a pure one-off.
The Bianco Monocerus paint and Giallo Tiberino stripes (that's 'white paint' and 'gold stripes' to us commoners) are meant to reference the Vatican City flag. Inside, the sports seats and dash are coated with Bianco Leda Sportivo leather, with the Lamborghini crest proudly embossed onto each headrest.
The cherry on top? Pope Francis' signature is on the bonnet.
The money generated from auction will go to Pope Francis, who will then distribute it between the city of Nineveh (a city in Iraq torn apart by ISIS in recent times), Amici per il Centrafrica Onlus (a world poverty lay association), Groupe International Chirurgiens Amis de la Main (a foundation supporting various nations in Africa and Asia), and the Pope John XXIII Community Association.
