- The Smart #5 has received a five-star safety rating from Euro NCAP.
- The mid-size SUV scored the highest overall safety score of any ‘large’ SUV tested in 2025
- Every model in the Smart range has achieved five-star Euro NCAP rating.
The Smart #5 has been awarded a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating, with the highest overall score of any model tested in the large SUV category in 2025.
Despite what Euro NCAP’s test categories would have you believe, the Smart #5 is a mid-size premium SUV, and achieved high scores across all four main assessment areas, with 93 percent in Child Occupant protection, 92 percent in Safety Assist, 84 percent in Vulnerable Road User protection, and 88 percent in Adult Occupant protection.
Smart says the foundation of the #5’s five-star Euro NCAP rating is its passive safety: a steel–aluminium hybrid body, made up of 82 percent high-strength material, creates a rigid safety cage around its occupants.
While the high-strength materials in the A and B pillars are industry-standard, Smart says the #5 goes further, with “full coverage of high-strength materials on the side doors and rear door opening area to ensure comprehensive occupant protection.”
The Smart #5 is set to launch in New Zealand, likely early next year, and will join the Smart #1 and Smart #3, both of which also scored a full five star rating from Euro NCAP.
The #5 is roughly the same size as a Toyota RAV4 and will compete in the premium mid-size electric SUV segment, alongside the likes of the VW ID.4 and Tesla Model Y.
In global markets the #5 is available in a range of models, from an entry level car with a 76kWh battery and a single 250kW electric motor, up to 100kWh AWD models, while a fire-breathing 475kW AWD Brabus model has also been revealed.
The #5 is built on an 800-volt platform that supports ultra-fast DC charging of up to 400kW, allowing the 100kWh battery to charge from 10 to 80 percent in just 18 minutes.
Model, specification and pricing for the New Zealand market have all yet to be revealed.
