For the first time in its history Skoda has sold more than one million cars in one year.

The Czech firm sold almost 13 per cent more cars last year than during 2013, according to Skoda's chief executive officer, Professor Dr Winfried Vahland.

Skoda sold 1,037,200 vehicles during 2014, while also achieving record financial results.

Sales revenue increased by 13.8 per cent to 11.8 billion euros, and operating profit increased by 56.5 per cent to 817 million euros.

"By delivering more than one million vehicles for the first time in a single year, we have sustainably established ourselves as a volume manufacturer on the international markets with our modern model range, said Professor Vahland.

"It is on this basis that our brand will be persuing our growth strategy."

Skoda, part of the huge Volkswagon conglomerate, was also continuing to enjoy international sales success.

The company's sales increased by almost 8 per cent during the first two months of the year, compared with January and February last year.

During January and February the company sold 163,000 vehicles.

This year Skoda will launch a new Superb model, and will also be releasing new versions of other models such as the Octavia RS 230, the Fabia Monte Carlo and other 'Edition' models for Fabia, Rapid, Octavia and Yeti.

Skoda is aiming to increase annual sales to at least 1.5 million vehicles within the next few years, and is expanding production plants in the Czech Republic and elsewhere.
