There could well be no limit to this 'premium' pick-up boom.
We've of course talked in detail about top-dollar dual-cab pick-ups like the Ford Ranger Raptor, Holden Colorado SportsCat by HSV, and the soon-to-land-here RAM 1500 Laramie. But in markets like the US and the Middle East — bolstered by the wealthy — there's an emerging thirst for stuff that's even bigger and sillier.
It started with the Mercedes-AMG G63 6x6 of course; a six-wheeled beast based on the illustrious G-Wagen and packing a 405kW twin-turbo 5.5-litre V8 engine. Since then, numerous other manufacturers and tuning companies (like Land Rover for example) have had a go at making their own. And now that list includes Hennessey.
The American tuning group have been in Driven's headlines lately following the reveal of their 808hp Heritage Edition Mustang, two of which are scheduled to come to New Zealand in right-hand drive.
Now they're in the headlines again for this total Goliath of a thing.
The G-word is not only by nature, but also by name. Hennessey have christened their six-wheeled creation the Goliath 6x6. It's based on the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado, but obviously adds another row of driven wheels. And there's more, too.
The 6.2-litre V8 has been equipped with a 2.9-litre supercharger, helping the Goliath produce 525kW and 914Nm at its peak — 212kW and 395Nm more than standard. Rather incredibly, Hennessey say that the Goliath is capable of sprinting from 0–96km/h in "the mid four second range".
And hilariously, buyers can opt for even more power via a mysterious Hennessey "stroker motor upgrade". There's little detail on what that entails exactly, but it's meant to up power output to a ridiculous 602kW.
It's not all power, of course. The Hennessey also sports a sticker pack, sports bar, new LEDs, revised suspension, and six beefy BF Goodrich off-road shoes. Options on top of that include a Brembo brake system and reworked interior.
Truth be told, this is Hennessey's second shot at the six-wheeled game. Last year they revealed the limited edition VelociRaptor — a Ford F-150 Raptor–based rig that managed to squeeze more than 450kW from the blue oval's 3.5-litre V6 EcoBoost unit while adding another two wheels to the mix.
And just like the VelociRaptor and aforementioned Heritage Edition Mustang, production numbers for the Goliath are scarce. Just 24 are scheduled to be produced, with an attached price-tag of US$375,000 (NZ$$565,000).
We'll take five.
