I don't know about you, but when I hear the word 'Ferrari' my mind conjures a very specific image. It's Maranello Red — a circuit-slaying thoroughbred (horse pun, unintended). It's athletic, masculine, and elegant all at once.
It's not this yellow creation ... Not really.
This is a 2015 Ferrari Sergio, and it doesn't really scream 'Ferrari' on first impressions. Take away that prancing horse badge on the ground-level front grill and this could be just about anything.
Under the curious skin, however, this is a Ferrari 458. The car comes with a very Ferrari-esque story line too. The Sergio name is a hat-tip to the late famed coachbuilder Sergio Pininfarina. He passed away in 2012, with Ferrari debuting the tribute Sergio concept a year later.
Sergio (the late coachbuilder, not the car) influenced a variety of Ferraris. Most notably, he was the lead designer for the now hallowed Ferrari F40 supercar.
The 2013 Sergio concept car was a wild, sculpted roadster; rather different to what ended up rolling off the production line. But what the Sergio might have lacked in visual drama, it made up in raw exclusivity. Just six of them were made; three for American buyers, one for a Swiss buyer, one for a Japanese buyer, and (naturally) one for a buyer in the United Arab Emirates.
This particular car is believed to be the one that went to Switzerland. Luxury goods dealers JamesEdition in the Netherlands have it listed for sale for the princely sum of €4.3 million — or NZ$6.8 million. For that money, you could probably buy like 15 of the Ferrari 458 it's based on.
But, if it's exclusivity you want, it would be this Sergio every time.
