In 2016 over 88.1 million cars and light commercial vehicles left dealerships world-wide, this is where they were sold.

With research conducted by Regtransfers, a UK-based number plate dealer, revealing that Toyota is still the highest selling brand in more countries.

Regransfers analysed sales data from around the world to determine the top-selling car manufacturer in every country. The competition amped up last year with Volkswagen taking a fair chunk out of Toyota. But in 2016, Toyota was still the clear winner.

Despite being overtaken by Volkswagen as the world's highest-selling car manufacturer in 2016, Toyota came out on top as the most popular make in 49 countries.

Volkswagen was the most popular in 14 countries, all in Europe.

In New Zealand the sales success of the Ford Ranger made Ford the top-selling brand in 2016. Ford was also the top selling in seven other countries including USA, Canada and France.

Renault was the fourth top manufacture, leading sales in six countries including Brazil, Egypt and Chile.

Fifth spot was tied between Dacia and Fiat with both makes claiming top spot in five countries.
