Volkswagen's Arteon liftback sedan launched in New Zealand earlier this year with in 'all options ticket' specification', but reports overseas suggest the company isn't finished adding features in at least one area - the engine bay.
The Arteon R-Line - the only model introduced locally - is powered by Volkswagen's punchy direct injection 2.0-litre turbocharged engine producing plenty of power, 206kW to be exact and 350Nm of torque from 1700-5600rpm.
But speaking with CarThrottle Volkswagen spokesperson Martin Hube said that the company has a working Arteon prototype with even more oomph.
Allegedly the prototype Arteon is powered by a turbocharged (likely twin turbo) VR6 3.0-litre V6 engine with over 400hp.
“I’m totally convinced that this combination is extremely nice,” said Hube.
“We’ve combined it with the last version of the Haldex [Volkswagen's four-wheel drive system], where you can provoke a bit of oversteer. This is a real agile, powerful car.”
Hube went on to say the prototype Arteon has already proven itself on Germany's unrestricted Autobahn highways, taking a stab at Porsche along the way; “You can beat all the Porsche Panameras out of your way!” he added.
The last Volkswagen models to wear VR6 badging were the Mk5 Golfs and first-generation Passats from 2009 - 2011.
Here's hoping Volkswagen New Zealand will soon add one box to tick on the Arteon spec sheet, one that gives you over 400hp and 'a bit of oversteer.'
