New GT2 RS will be the most powerful Porsche 911 ever
It's been a wild road for the launch of the new Porsche 911 GT2 RS. First, they showcased it at the launch of Forza Motorsport 7 in Los Angeles, only to then deny that 'launch' later on. And then images of the car — Porsche's own promotional ones, on top of those taken at LA — were leaked late last week.
It all fueled the fire that the 'top secret car' Porsche were to reveal at the Goodwood Festival of Speed over the weekend in the UK would be the 911 GT2 RS. And, sure enough, it happened.
What's more, a lot of the figures bounced around in the build-up were confirmed. It develops 700hp (522kW) and 750Nm of torque from its 3.8-litre engine, making it the most powerful 911 ever made. That engine is derived from the the one currently utilized in the 911 Turbo S, only it's been upgraded with a titanium exhaust and bigger turbochargers.
It will only come with a slightly reworked PDK dual-clutch seven-speed transmission (no manual stick). But while that might annoy some of the purists, it'll help the RS go from 0–100 in just 2.7 seconds, and hit a top speed of a whopping 340km/h.
And the engine and transmission are just the beginning. Carbon-ceramic brakes, Porsche's torque vectoring and active suspension management systems are all standard.
The Weissach package is likely to be the one people pine for. It's also the one that featured in the sneaked images published around the world last week.
The key to the package is that it trims 30kg from the RS, mainly via trading certain parts (like the anti-roll bars and the coupling rods on both axles) for lighter alternatives made carbon fibre or carbon-fibre reinforced plastic. You also get magnesium wheels, to further reduce weight across the board.
I feel a new supercar war coming on...
