In the grand scheme of things, I feel like New Zealand's police force do rather well when it comes to their vehicles. Better a set of Commodores than a squad of dressed up Smart FourTwos or Vauxhall Astras like other places on the other side of the world.
But I'm not quite sure even a Commodore can hold a candle to what Milan's police department have just added to their fleet: a Ferrari 458 Spider.
The Italian stallion was reportedly seized by police two years ago from the mafia, and then held in storage until the decision was made to turn it into a rolling advert for the local police — or the Polizia Locale, in Italian (feel free to whip that out for your mates if you want to look cultured).
The transformation was made possible by the Carrozzeria Marazzi Caronno Pertusella (hope I pronounced that correctly), who apparently offered to make the modifications to the car free of charge. They include the design-by-Christmas decals, as well as the swanky lights on the buttresses.
For those now conjuring romantic ideas of Ferrari cop cars chasing down baddies Need for Speed III style, sadly that's not on the cards. The 458 is purely a PR exercise for the department, who say that they'll take the car on the travelling tour through a series of events to highlight the work of the police and to show that crime doesn't pay.
I mean. Crime did pay for the Ferrari. But ... well, you know what I mean.
