Polestar 7 confirmed for 2028 with shared Volvo platform.

Polestar 7 confirmed for 2028 with shared Volvo platform.

  • Polestar 7 will launch in 2028 as a premium compact EV-SUV using Volvo’s SPA3 platform.
It will be built alongside a new Volvo model at a Slovakian plant with a 250,000-unit capacity.
  • Polestar 7 will feature next-gen cell-to-body battery tech and in-house electric motors.

Polestar’s product pipeline just got a little more crowded, though it’s playing the long game.

The EV maker has revealed its next big launch: the Polestar 7, a compact electric SUV scheduled for release in 2028.

And while the details are still under wraps (literally and figuratively), there’s already plenty to unpack.

Plugged into Volvo (with a twist)

Built on Volvo’s next-gen SPA3 architecture, the Polestar 7 will share a platform with several upcoming models from its parent brand, including a still-unannounced Volvo SUV due before 2028.

Both will roll out of Volvo’s new €1.2 billion (NZ$2.34 billion) manufacturing plant in Kosice, Slovakia, which is expected to churn out up to 250,000 units annually once operational.

Polestar has confirmed the 7 will leverage “group component sharing, cell-to-body technology with next-generation battery density and performance, as well as the next generation of in-house developed e-motors.”

But the brand insists it won’t just be a rebadged Volvo. Expect bespoke tuning and design tweaks to deliver the sharper dynamics and minimalist vibe Polestar is known for.

Silhouette reveal, specs still sealed

A teaser image shows a camouflaged SUV under a sheet, hinting at a bold front fascia, prominent fenders, and signature Polestar badging. Beyond that, the spec sheet remains blank - Polestar has not disclosed battery size, range, or output figures yet.

However, given the brand’s push toward next-gen cell-to-body tech, expect impressive kW ratings and efficiency numbers when the wraps do come off.

“Working with Volvo Cars to develop and manufacture Polestar 7 in Europe is a unique opportunity that will strengthen our position in our home market,” said Polestar CEO Michael Lohscheller.

“Our strategy of utilising Group architectures as the base for our future model lineup gives us access to the best, latest technologies, in a cost-efficient manner.”

Volvo EX60 leads the charge

Polestar’s announcement came hand-in-hand with news that Volvo is prepping two SPA3-based models of its own - one of which is confirmed as the EX60

Due next year, the EX60 will debut a novel “multi-adaptive safety belt” system that adjusts in real time to the occupant’s size, posture, and external traffic data.

“The Polestar 7 underscores how Volvo Cars and Polestar continue to leverage synergies,” said Volvo CEO Håkan Samuelsson. “It builds on the success of our joint efforts on the widely acclaimed Polestar 2 and Polestar 3.”

Between the shared tech and staggered timelines, the Polestar 7 is shaping up to be both a strategic play and a design differentiator - assuming Polestar can inject enough of its own DNA into the Volvo bones. We’ll know more as 2028 nears.
