BMW have announced a new X5 performance plug-in model due for release 'in the course of 2019' that, on paper at least, could be one one of the best hybrid packages of the year.
The newly announced BMW X5 xDrive45e iPerformance will follow in the footsteps of the BMW X5 xDrive40e plug-in first introduced to Kiwis in 2017. But while the previous model made do with a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine, the upcoming X5 xDrive45e iPerformance will be powered by a model-specific in-line 6-cylinder turbo unit and matched with BMW's latest eDrive hyrbid system.
Combined, the system is said to produce 290kW (394hp) and deliver a full-electric range of approximately 80km. The combined fuel consumption sits at an advertised 2.1 litres per 100 kilometres and CO2 emissions figure is 49 grams per kilometre.

The BMW X5 xDrive45e iPerformance will accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in 5.6 seconds and is capable of hitting a top speed of 140km/h on electric power alone, or combined to hit an electronically limited top speed of 235km/h.
The a 3.0-litre turbo petrol engine produces 210kW and the BMW iPerformance electrical system has an output of 82 kW. Together, the two drive units generate a system output of 290kW and maximum torque of 600Nm.

The combustion engine and electric motor deliver power to BMW's latest 8-speed Steptronic transmission and xDrive all-wheel drive system, which can now transfer torque to all four wheels independently on electric power alone.
Thanks to the high-voltage battery positioned in the underbody, BMW say the centre of gravity is lower than in conventionally powered SUV models, while 150 litres of rear luggage space is lost in the boot. When all seats are used, the storage volume is 500 litres; if the rear backrests are folded down, 1716 litres is available.
The new BMW X5 xDrive45e iPerformance will be fitted standard with two-axle air suspension and electronically controlled dampers standard.
In addition, all driver assistance systems developed for BMW SUVs as well as high-quality options to enhance comfort and luxurious are also available for the new BMW X5 xDrive45e iPerformance.
BMW New Zealand are yet to finalise their 2019 line-up, but talking exclusively with Driven, the outfit confirmed early plans are in the works to offer the X5 plug-in to Kiwis down the line. Their message to those interested in an SUV with a turbo six-cylinder engine and usable electric range is: "Watch this space".
