So less really is more: the Ram 1500 pickup truck has lost two cylinders for New Zealand but gained a whole lot more power, thanks to a new "Hurricane" twin-turbo 6-cylinder engine.

New goodies for 1500 include power (both up and down) tailgate.

So out goes the old 5.7-litre Hemi V8. In its place are two versions of the new 3.0-litre twin turbo. The $164,990 1500 Laramie Sport gets a standard output (SO) Hurricane with 313kW/635Nm; even this entry-level powertrain has 7.6% more power and 14.2% more torque than the outgoing V8.

The $185,990 1500 Limited gets a high output (HO) engine with 403kW/707Nm, substantial increases of 38.5% and 27.2% over the Hemi.

“While the iconic 5.7-litre Hemi V8 has won fans all over NZ with its iconic sound, the all-new Ram 1500 with the Hurricane engine brings more power, torque and performance to the Ram Trucks line-up” says Todd Groves, general sales manager of Ram Trucks New Zealand.

“With 90% of the torque available from just 2,\350rpm it also brings a smoother and more refined drive than we have ever experienced before."

New features on Laramie Sport include redesigned LED headlights and tail-lights, new front fascia, 14.4in infotainment screen with 10.25 front-passenger screen (complete with separate phone mirroring), dual wireless phone charging, and a power tailgate for both up and down operation.

The Limited adds animation for the lights, proximity lighting on unlock at night, a 125-litre fuel tank and massaging seats.
