Nissan has unveiled the R32 EV in full after a brief introduction last year. It is an electric reinterpretation of the 1989 Skyline GT-R, showcased at the 2025 Tokyo Auto Salon.
This one-off electromod, spearheaded by a small group of Nissan employees, reimagines the iconic R32 as a fully electric vehicle (EV), blending nostalgic design with cutting-edge technology.
Enhanced power, modern tech
Replacing the revered twin-turbo 2.6-litre RB26 inline-six, the R32 EV features a dual-motor all-wheel-drive (AWD) system delivering a combined 320kW and 680Nm of torque - well above the original’s 206kW and 353Nm.
Despite this boost, Nissan emphasises that the output was tuned to mirror the performance of the original GT-R, accounting for the EV’s 367kg weight increase. This balance ensures a comparable torque-to-weight ratio.
The 62kWh battery, sourced from a Leaf Nismo race car, replaces the rear seats to optimise space and efficiency.
Although Nissan hasn’t disclosed range figures, the dual-motor system is said to deliver faster, more precise torque distribution compared to the original mechanical setup.
Performance-driven upgrades
The R32 EV incorporates a Nismo sport suspension with Ohlins dampers and an upgraded braking system from the R35 GT-R.
Larger rotors and callipers necessitated a switch from the original 16-inch wheels to 18-inch alloys. These adjustments aim to provide handling and stopping power befitting the car’s modernised drivetrain.
Inside, the cabin retains its vintage appeal with high-resolution digital screens mimicking the original gauges.
Factory seats have been replaced by custom Recaros, while paddle shifters simulate a manual gearbox. To further preserve its heritage, a speaker replicates the RB26 engine note for drivers.
Future-proofing a legend
Project leader Ryozo Hiraku explained the philosophy behind their R32 EV: “I wondered if 30 years from now – in 2055 or beyond – owners of this incredible machine could still buy gasoline and enjoy driving it.”
By leveraging electric and digital technologies, Nissan aims to secure the R32’s appeal for future generations, ensuring it remains relevant in an era of electrification.
The R32 EV may divide purists, but it boldly bridges heritage with innovation, ensuring the spirit of the Skyline GT-R lives on.
