Nissan New Zealand has revealed local pricing and specifications for the upcoming fifth-generation Navara ute, designated as the D27 series, ahead of its New Zealand showroom debut next month.

This latest incarnation of the popular Navara arrives as the nameplate celebrates its 40th anniversary in the local market, where it has recorded over 70,000 sales since 1986. The new range will be comprised of four distinct grades - SL, ST, ST-X, and Pro-4X - all of which will only be available as double-cab 4WD pick-ups with automatic transmissions.

The Navara shares most of its exterior panels with the Mitsubishi Triton, but differentiates itself at the rear with a unique taillight design and large NAVARA badging across the tailgate.

Being based on the Mitsubishi Triton, the entire 2025 Navara lineup is powered by a familiar 150kW/470Nm 2.4-litre bi-turbo diesel engine hooked up to a wide-ratio six-speed automatic transmission, as well as sharing its platform, the majority of external body panels and interior with the Mitsubishi.

The key difference between the two comes under the skin, however, where Australian automotive engineering specialist Premcar was extensively involved in tuning the Navara's suspension for local conditions.

Australian automotive engineering outfit Premcar was extensively involved in localising the Navara's suspension set up.

Premcar carried out an extensive engineering program that saw the new Navara driven over 18,000 kilometres across "every conceivable surface and driving condition", from the corrugated roads of the Australian Outback to urban stop-start traffic with heavy loads, and the company says the result is a "compliant and comfortable ride whether unladen or loaded to maximum capacity, with confident handling when towing."

"Forty years of Navara in this region isn't just a milestone - it's a responsibility," said Andrew Humberstone, Managing Director, Nissan Oceania. "New Zealand customers have trusted this nameplate for decades, and we've honoured that trust by investing in genuine local engineering."

The Navara range begins with the SL model that is priced at $54,690 and comes standard with LED headlights, a 7-inch instrument cluster display, and a 9-inch infotainment touchscreen that supports wireless Apple CarPlay and wired Android Auto.

The Navara's interior is attractive and spacious, but largely identical to the Triton's.

The SL sits on 17-inch steel wheels with all-terrain tyres and features an ‘Easy Select’ 4WD system with a dual-range transfer case, while an electronic locking rear differential as standard.

The Navara ST lands at $57,690 and adds "lifestyle-oriented" to the SL's standard spec, including 17-inch alloy wheels, LED front fog lamps, power-folding heated exterior mirrors, a leather-accented steering wheel and carpeted flooring. Every model from the ST up also comes standard with the Premcar-tuned suspension set up.

The $62,690 Navara ST-X ups the game again by adding a "Super 4WD" system, which features a Torsen limited-slip centre differential and seven selectable terrain modes ranging from Sand to Rock. Visual changes include 18-inch gunmetal grey alloy wheels and chrome-finished mirrors, while the cabin gets dual-zone climate control, leather-accented seats with power adjustment for the driver, and a wireless smartphone charger.

The ST-X gets a more advanced 4X4 system and larger alloy wheels.

Topping the Navara range in New Zealand is the Pro-4X model that is priced at $67,690 and is distinguished by its specific styling and off-road focus, including all-terrain tyres. The Pro-4X features 17-inch matt black alloy wheels, a unique grille with lava red accents, black roof rails, and leather-accented seats with suede bolsters and orange stitching.

Nissan says that safety is a priority across the entire Navara range, with all models carrying a 5-star ANCAP rating, while its standard safety suite includes eight airbags and a comprehensive array of driver assistance systems, such as Autonomous Emergency Braking, Blind Spot Warning, and an Intelligent Around View Monitor with Moving Object Detection.

The Navara's pricing puts it roughly in the same ballpark as its Mitsubishi Triton sibling, with the Triton GLX starting Mitsubishi's double cab 4WD range at $50,740, with a GLXR at $53,990 and the range-topping VRX landing at $59,990. These broadly line up with the SL, ST and ST-X Navara's, with Mitsubishi not offering an equivalent to the Navara Pro-4X, making the Nissan a pricier proposition, albeit with the improved ride offered by the Premcar suspension tweaks.

The Pro-4X tops the Navara range and gets distinctive 'lava red' highlights, roof rails and matt black alloy wheels.

The new Navara comes with a 5 year/150,000km warranty and 5 years of 24-hour roadside assistance. Eight exterior colours are available across the range, with three standard colours (Alpine White, Midnight Black, Outback Red) and five premium colours (Blizzard White, Summit Silver, Boulder Grey, Horizon Blue, Kimberley Orange) attracting a $500 surcharge.

The Navara is due to go on sale in New Zealand in March via Nissan's nationwide dealer network.
