AMG’s next-gen electric SUV faces the Arctic chill.

AMG’s next-gen electric SUV faces the Arctic chill.

Mercedes-AMG has taken its next-generation electric vehicle (EV) prototype to the icy extremes of northern Sweden, marking the first time the high-performance SUV has been seen in action.

This upcoming SUV, the second vehicle to utilise the brand's bespoke AMG.EA electric architecture, joins a new four-door coupe under development. Both models are undergoing rigorous cold-weather testing in temperatures well below freezing near the Arctic Circle.

First teased through concept sketches, the AMG SUV appears to maintain a coupe-like design language with sleek bodywork, echoing the silhouette of flagship Mercedes models.

Mercedes-AMG EV SUV

With dimensions likely on par with the current GLS, Mercedes-AMG is positioning this SUV as a high-performance EV alternative that breaks stylistic ties with the existing EQ lineup.

While full specifications remain under wraps, Mercedes-AMG is developing a drivetrain that promises blistering power and efficiency.

Central to its innovation is a next-generation high-performance battery concept, delivering a substantial 40% boost in energy density compared to current systems.

The SUV will incorporate axial-flux motors - advanced, compact units capable of delivering exceptional power density. Early projections suggest the SUV could exceed 736kW, surpassing the current EQE SUV, which peaks at 460kW and sprints from 0 to 100km/h in 3.4 seconds.

Mercedes-AMG’s decision to conduct testing in Sweden underlines the importance of system durability under extreme stress.

Engineers are focusing on the interaction between critical components, including power delivery and battery performance. The unforgiving environment near the Arctic Circle ensures the vehicle’s systems can handle real-world challenges.

Mercedes-AMG's new performance SUV and its sibling four-door coupe may debut in earnest by early 2025.
