Hyundai has revealed the all-new Nexo at the Seoul Mobility Show in a significant leap in its hydrogen strategy.
The second-generation hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) adopts a more robust design, aerodynamic enhancements and a range boost targeting over 700km from a five-minute hydrogen refill.
Built on the Initium concept, the new Nexo adopts Hyundai’s ‘Art of Steel’ design philosophy, emphasising strength and formability. Its arch-shaped profile and horizontal groove detailing convey structural integrity while reinforcing its SUV presence.
Unique ‘HTWO’ lighting signatures and new colour options - like Goyo Copper Pearl - link the styling back to Hyundai’s hydrogen branding.
Larger, smarter, more versatile cabin
Inside, Nexo continues Hyundai’s emphasis on space, with expanded dimensions resulting in improved legroom and cargo capacity - up to 993L behind the second row.
Premium ventilated rear seating, a curved dual-screen display and a redesigned centre console all contribute to a more refined, tech-laden cabin. Sustainable materials are used extensively, from bio-based leathers to recycled PET and TPO plastics.
Other usability upgrades include wider-opening rear doors, integrated digital side mirrors, dual wireless phone charging and ambient lighting linked to road speed alerts.
Hydrogen powertrain upgrades
Nexo's new powertrain increases total output from 135kW to 190 kW, helping drop its 0 to 100km/h sprint to 7.8 seconds.
The upgraded fuel cell stack now produces 110kW gross, while motor output rises to 150kW. Battery output has doubled to 80kW.
Hydrogen storage rises to 6.69kg, paired with improved tank density and power electronics efficiency.
Drag-reducing underbody tweaks and active noise-cancelling tyres contribute to smoother performance and improved NVH.
For the first time, Nexo adds towing capability with up to 1000kg in the European spec, further enhancing its practicality.
Safety and tech push Nexo forward
Hyundai has equipped Nexo with the latest in advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), including Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist 2.0, Smart Cruise Control with navigation input, and a radar-based Rear Occupant Alert.
A comprehensive structural rethink with ultra-high-strength steel and improved crash load paths aims to earn top-tier safety ratings globally.
On the tech front, the ccNC system integrates a 12.3-inch digital cluster and infotainment unit with OTA updates and AI-powered voice recognition.
Nexo also debuts features like Digital Key 2, biometric fingerprint login, V2L power outlets, and a built-in dashcam with a four-day parking mode.
With production models expected to hit global markets later this year, the new Nexo highlights Hyundai’s rapidly advancing FCEV technology while broadening its zero-emissions portfolio.
In related news, Hyundai also recently unveiled the facelifted Ioniq 6 EV, introducing a new N Line variant in the process.
