Petrol-powered Cupra Leon extended into the next decade before EV shift.

Petrol-powered Cupra Leon extended into the next decade before EV shift.

The Cupra Leon is set to endure another decade in its current petrol and hybrid forms, but the iconic nameplate is destined for an electric-only future.

Cupra’s CEO, Wayne Griffiths, has confirmed that the next-generation Leon will make the leap to electric, aligning with the Volkswagen Group’s push toward electrification.

The electric Leon will be built on the advanced Scalable Systems Platform (SSP), a cutting-edge architecture designed for the next wave of EVs across the VW Group portfolio.

The move to an all-electric Leon will expand Cupra’s electric vehicle (EV) offerings, joining models like the Born and NZ-bound Tavascan

While details about the electric Leon remain scarce, the SSP platform suggests shared components such as battery packs and powertrains with other VW Group EVs, enhancing economies of scale and technology integration.

Adding intrigue, the transition to EV could see the Seat-branded Leon phased out entirely, allowing Cupra to solidify its identity as a performance-focused, forward-thinking brand. This would mark a significant departure from the Leon’s dual-brand history.

For traditionalists, there’s no immediate rush to bid farewell to the petrol-powered Leon.

Griffiths reassured fans that the current model, including its internal combustion and plug-in hybrid variants, will remain in production “well into the next decade.”

He also hinted at ongoing updates to keep the Leon competitive, stating, “We will extend [the Cupra Leon and Cupra Formentor] well into the next decade... We could expect facelifts or product improvements on both, to keep them going as long as we need to.”

Indeed, last year’s Leon facelift introduced sharper styling, including updated triangular matrix LED headlights, an enlarged grille and illuminated badging. These revisions ensure the model stays fresh while SUVs dominate the market.

Although estate variants like the Sportourer remain an option for now, their future is uncertain as SUVs continue to overshadow traditional estates.

The next-generation electric Leon will likely focus on market demands, possibly debuting as a sleek hatchback or crossover SUV.

With its electrified evolution on the horizon, the Cupra Leon promises to remain a key player in the brand’s portfolio, blending its sporty heritage with cutting-edge features.

The current Leon model lineup is also available in New Zealand, starting at $53,900 for the five-door Leon V.
