The GWM Cannon ute is stepping up to a larger engine and increased towing capacity, in an upgraded model that goes on sale in New Zealand from February.

Formerly a 2.0-litre turbo diesel (120kW/400Nm) with a braked 3-tonne tow rating, the Cannon now has a 2.4-litre powerplant with 135kW/480Nm and can haul 3.5 tonnes, placing it up with the class best.
There's just one model, a 4x4 dual cab in Lux specification for $43,490.
The engine has been borrowed from the Cannon Alpha, an even larger ute which should not be confused with this more mainstream model (the Alpha is derived from the Tank 500 SUV).

The 2.4-litre engine delivers its 135kW at 3600rpm and 480Nm between 1500-2500rpm. It's paired with GWM’s in-house 9-speed automatic transmission.
GWM also says it features a "new generation of selectable intelligent all-terrain drive modes", with up to seven available: Normal, Eco, Sport, Snow, Mud, and Sand. There's an electronically activated rear differential lock for more challenging off-tarmac driving.
The redesigned centre console, with a 12.3in touch screen, has fewer buttons and dials. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is wireless, while the newly designed steering wheel features the Cannon logo.
GWM offers a 7-year unlimited-km new-vehicle warranty and 5-year roadside assistance.
