AMG GT XX tested 850kW charging hub with 1000-amp cable.

AMG GT XX tested 850kW charging hub with 1000-amp cable.

  • The Concept AMG GT XX uses three axial-flux motors and a direct-cooled 800V battery exceeding 1000kW.
  • Mercedes-AMG developed a Central Coolant Hub, underbody cooling plate and plasma actuators to optimise efficiency and stability.
  • A bespoke Alpitronic system enabled 850kW charging with 1000-amp CCS cabling during the Nardò endurance test.

The Mercedes Concept AMG GT XX may have hogged headlines for smashing long-distance records recently, but Mercedes-AMG’s real flex lies under the skin.

The prototype’s week-long stint at Nardo was less about chasing lap counts and more about showing off a toolbox of new tricks destined for production.

Cool heads at 300 km/h

Instead of the usual “go fast, cool later” approach, AMG designed the GT XX to deliver full performance no matter what.

A Central Coolant Hub juggles temperatures across motors, battery and electronics, while a passive underbody cooling plate quietly siphons away heat.

Pair that with active aero and a drag coefficient of just 0.19, and you’ve got an EV that can run hot laps without breaking a sweat.

Engineers even trialled plasma actuators - electric devices that control airflow without spoilers or moving parts. Think of it as aerodynamics by wire.

Charge like you mean it

Pit stops were just as ambitious. Partnering with Alpitronic, Mercedes-AMG built a bespoke 850kW charging hub on site, with cables rated to a beefy 1000 amps.

The system could dump hundreds of kilometres of range into the battery in minutes, well beyond what today’s public chargers can deliver. If AMG’s aim was to prove EVs don’t need to crawl when charging, mission accomplished.

Sci-fi cockpit vibes

Inside, the GT XX blurred motorsport and video game worlds. Drivers wore AR racing helmets that projected lap data, charge levels and recuperation cues directly into their line of sight.

A bespoke UI/UX on the twin screens simplified marathon stints, while 3D-printed seat pads (shaped from body scans) gave each driver their perfect perch.

Even the exterior joined in with illuminated paintwork and a fluid-light rear panel. To top it off, journalists got to relive the record run through “ThrillAR,” a mixed-reality demo on Apple Vision Pro.

Michael Schiebe, AMG’s CEO, summed it up: “Many of the technologies from the Concept AMG GT XX will soon make their way into our production vehicles… our customers will benefit from an entirely new dimension of sustained electric power.”

Records make headlines, but tech makes history. AMG clearly has its eye on both.
