Mercedes-Benz has announced the S-class cabriolet, saying it is the first open-top luxury four-seater from the company since 1971.

The model, to be released at the Frankfurt Motor Show later this month, will include " a comprehensive warmth and wind protection concept which includes intelligent climate control for convertibles."

Mercedes-Benz will also show the Mercedes-AMG S 63 4MATIC cabriolet, with a 5.5 litre V8 biturbo engine, at the motor show.

The company says the new model's engine puts out 430 Kw and peak torque of 900Nm, has all-wheel-drive and will accelerate from 0 to 100 km in just 3.9 seconds.

"After 44 years we are once again able to offer Mercedes aficionados an open-top car in the S-Class." said Ola Källenius, board member of Daimler AG, Mercedes-Benz Cars Sales.

The new S-Class Cabriolet was exceptionally rigid, and included innovations such as a luggage compartment bulkhead made of aluminium and magnesium as well as an aluminium rear floor.

It is not known when or if the new models will be available in New Zealand.
