Mercedes-Benz reveals C-Class Coupe

Mercedes-Benz is launching a coupe version to its medium-sized C-Class range of models.

The company says the new model, arriving in New Zealand in mid-2016, will be the sportiest variant of the C-Class range.

The new coupe is 60mm longer than its predecessor, and the suspension will be set 15 mm lower than the sedan.

Mercedes-Benz says the new car will have more shoulder, elbow and headroom in all seats compared with its predecessor.

Lightweight construction to reduce weight, excellent aerodynamics and high performance yet efficient engines and a generous interior would set new standards in its segment, said Professor Dr Thomas Weber, the member of the company's board of management responsible for Mercedes-Benz car development.

"It combines thrilling design with agile sportiness and modern luxury," he said.

The new car will be powered by four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines with ECO start/stop function, which the company says will use up to 27 per cent less fuel than previous models.

Four petrol engines will be available, ranging from a 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine in the C 180, with 115 kW hp to the 2-litre C 200 (135 kW) and C 250 (155 kW) models and the C 300, likewise with a displacement of two litres but with an output of 180 kW.

The two diesel models are equipped with an enhanced four-cylinder unit developing 125 kW or 150 kW.

Light alloy components on the coupe include the wings, bonnet and boot lid, although Mercedes-Benz says the body will be stiffer and stronger thanks to the use of high-strength materials.

The company says these changes would mean improved driving dynamics and noise levels, and improved safety standards.

The new model will be officially launched in Spain in November, while New Zealand specifications and prices will be

announced closer to launch date.
