Mercedes-Benz has unveiled its latest contender in the SUV market at the local launch in Melbourne this week.
The GLC takes up the medium position in the German manufacturers SUV range and finally plugs a hole in the RHD line up that has long been a glaring omission in Mercedes’ local offerings.
Effectively a replacement for the GLK mid-size SUV that was never built in RHD, the GLC finally sees Mercedes able to take on the BMW X3 and Audi Q5 on local shores, with a C-Class sized competitor as its name suggests.
And the GLC plays that C-Class connection up to the hilt, with an interior that perfectly reproduces the sedan and Estate interior in the higher SUV.
At launch the GLC range consists of three models in two spec levels. All models come standard with Mercedes 4matic AWD system and 9G-tronic 9-speed automatic transmission.
The GLC 220d kicks off the range at $89,900 and packs a 125kW/400Nm 2.1-litre 4-cylinder diesel turbo engine and comes standard with 19-inch alloy wheels, park assist, power tailgate, electric mirrors and side steps, Artico upholstery, electric seats, Garmin navigation, keyless start, ambient lighting, collision prevention assist and blind spot warning.
The GLC 250 and GLC 250d feature the same standard kit as the 220d, but add 20-inch alloys, keyless entry, privacy glass and Mercedes’ full driver assist package The 250 costs $94,900 and is powered by a 155kW/300Nm 2.0-litre 4-cylinder petrol turbo engine, while the 250d costs $96,900 and is powered by a 150kW/500Nm version of the 2.1-litre diesel.
