DRIVEN CAUGHT UP WITH SIDELINED WARRIORS AND KIWIS FULLBACK ROGER TUIVASA-SHECK
You're driving a 2016 Toyota Hilux SR5 Limited?
Yes, this one is dark grey. The ute changes every couple of weeks. I have had the same model, just different colours. This is an automatic, it's a Freerunner, a 2x2. Auckland City Toyota is my supplier. I like the truck look. It has a blacked-out sports bar, and drives really well. For a big truck it can swerve around. And it's good on diesel. I put in 50 bucks every second and a half week and that's good for me.
Who is allowed to drive your car?
Just me.
How often do you clean it?
My deal with Toyota is I drive it until it reaches a minimum number of kilometres and I switch over for a new one, so I try to keep it fresh and clean. I head to Car-fé in Greenlane almost every second week. I am good friends with Boston Ridge, Matthew Ridge's son, and I get the car professionally cleaned.
When will you be back playing?
I had an ACL torn on my left knee in round seven of the NRL in Wellington. It was tough at the time but I am on the good side of it now, starting to run and feel normal again. I will be there next year in round one ready to go. I have a three-year contract until the end of 2018.
Manual or automatic cars, which do you prefer?
I like auto with the traffic; it can get a bit annoying stopping, starting, stopping, starting.
Who taught you drive?
My dad taught me to drive a manual first. I used to work at Manukau Pak'nSave and because I finished at 10 most weekdays and weekends, that's when my lessons were, after work when no one was on the road.
Advice to young drivers?
Don't go Pokemon hunting. I think the biggest one for the young ones is probably the cellphone on them while driving.
Most memorable road trip?
It was a recent one, catching up with old school mates. We all went to Mt Maunganui. It wasn't planned but everyone was on a break. We just all jumped in the car and went. We booked a bach at Mt Maunganui beach and had four perfect days there, just swimming and hanging out.
If you could go on a road trip anywhere with any sportsperson...
I would go with the Kiwi players, fly to LA and then take a road trip from LA airport to Las Vegas. That would be awesome.
Favourite car scene from a movie?
It would have to be Fast and Furious 7. This is a funny one -- I forget the actor's name -- she was about to fall off a bridge but Vin Diesel is driving the car and he catches her.
Great day trip out of Auckland?
Hamilton, to pick up some real strawberry icecream from the dairy farm there.
Music when you're driving?
I am a big fan of the Flava Radio because it is all the music I like, R 'n B and hip hop. I am a massive Drake fan.
Other drivers ... what irritates you most?
No indicating, and when taxis pull out in front of you.
Cyclists and drivers .. is there room for both on NZ roads?
I think so but it can get pretty dangerous.
Would you rather drive in Auckland or take public transport?
Drive, because I know Auckland really well and the back streets.
Auckland's traffic .. your take on it?
It has definitely changed since I came back from Sydney. When I left in 2011 for the Roosters, we only had an hour's worth of peak hour traffic whereas now, it is spread out from 5.30 til almost 7.30.
