Brekkie host tuned into her Territory
Laura McGoldrick, Radio Hauraki DJ and Sky Sports presenter for the cricker world cup
What do you drive?
A dark blue 2014 Ford Territory Titanium. I can’t actually take a lot of credit for picking the car — my husband [Black Cap Martin Guptill] organised it. But I’m happy with it. I’m slightly on the shorter side, so I enjoy being higher up when driving. It’s a great car to drive, economical, it’s diesel, and it has lots of room in it for all my junk.
What was the first car you owned?
I had a VW Golf for about 10 years, it was the most reliable car I’ve had. I still have it.
Your dream car …
A 1967 light blue Shelby Mustang. My father works with cars and he loved old American cars. So did I growing up and he bought me a model of that Mustang — since then it’s always been my dream car.
Favourite car colour?
Black. I like dark colours on cars.
Who taught you to drive?
My father taught me to drive when I was 15. He was a great teacher; I, perhaps, was not the perfect student.
How often do you clean your car?
This is a real area of contention in my household and keeping cars clean is not really a strength of mine. I often leave rubbish down the side of the doors, which my husband can’t stand.
What do you always have in your car?
Wet wipes because you never know when something is going to spill. If you’re doing makeup in the car, always be prepared.
Manual or automatic?
Automatic, I have spent way too much time driving an automatic.
A favourite movie car scene …
The Thelma and Louise scene at the end when they drive away in the Thunderbird — that’s my kind of car. It’s a good film.
Most memorable road trip?
Christchurch to Kaiteriteri with my family for the Christmas holidays. Nothing better than five people and all their gear squished into a car. There was always a lot of singing involved in McGoldrick family road trips, and of course the number plate game — the loser buys the ice creams.
If you could go anywhere, in any car, with anyone?
If I had to choose a celebrity to go on a trip with, I would probably drive around France with Jonah Lomu. I would love to hear his stories. I am seeing some kind of convertible but Jonah likes fast cars, I believe, so probably a Ferrari or something like that.
What do you listen to when you’re driving?
Of course I always listen to Radio Hauraki, all family cars are tuned to this station. And I have been known to take the opportunity when in the car alone to practise my singing, so I play a lot of musical theatre tunes in the car as well.
What’s a great day trip out of Auckland?
Matakana, not too long to drive there and it’s gorgeous. My family and I like the markets there, we drive up and have lunch and a bit of a walk around and perhaps do a little bit of shopping.
Do you judge people by what they drive?
Not at all.
What irritates you most about other drivers?
Not indicating, so frustrating.
Would you rather drive in Auckland or take public transport?
I’d rather drive.
