The biggest story of the 2017 Formula 1 season? That had to be the rivalry between Lewis Hamilton and Sebastien Vettel. The second biggest story? Probably the ongoing chopping, changing and reacting of Liberty Media's movements as the series' new owners.
And the third biggest story was definitely McLaren's tango with Honda.
The relationship between the two parties started on tenterhooks, and seemed to get worse and worse as the season unfolded. Cars went from being excruciatingly slow in a straight line, to being both slow and unreliable. And in the middle of it all was a more-vocal-than-ever Fernando Alonso — oft avoiding pleasantries in putting the car's shortcomings on blast through team radio for all to hear.
And that was before he was somehow granted a release to race at the Indy 500 in America, missing the Monaco Grand Prix in the process. And yes, his IndyCar blew up too.
Anyway, we dig up the bones of this tale in light of this energetic new trailer from Amazon Prime (the folks that stream The Grand Tour) about a new documentary series that will plot McLaren's 2017 season from the inside.
Given the unassuming title GRAND PRIX Driver, the trailer is ropey in places. The hyperdramatic intro (complete with unnecessary dubbed over tyre noises) matched to the 'At over 200 miles per hour, any mistake could be your last' mantra doesn't bode well. Like the trailer for 2017's Williams, it looks like the producers are doing everything they can to make the tale appeal to casual viewers.
But, the guts of the story, and the level of access those producing it assuredly had, should render it a motorsport classic. Again, like Williams.
We can't wait to watch it ... Uhhhh, legally.
