Mazda has a pair of new concept models that are set to make their public debut at the Tokyo Motor Show, one that previews the company’s next-generation of products and another that hints the direction of the company’s next-generation 'Kodo' design.
The product concept model, a compact hatchback, is the most likely of the two to make it into full-scale production and could even be first glimpse of the next Mazda3.
It features the company's new SkyActiv-Vehicle Architecture, next-generation driving technologies and is powered by a SkyActiv-X engine, set to become the world’s first commercial gasoline engine to use compression ignition.
“In August, we announced our Sustainable Zoom-Zoom 2030 long-term vision for technology development, to help solve issues facing people, the earth and society," said Masamichi Kogai, Mazda’s Representative Director, President and CEO.
"The vision commits Mazda to make substantive cuts in CO2 emissions, and we believe the best way to achieve this is to reduce emissions under real-world conditions while offering a mix of combustion engines and electrification technologies in consideration of each region’s energy situation and energy mix.”

Mazda say the new underpinnings have refined the hatch's dynamic performance to create 'Mazda's ideal compact hatchback.'
The design vision concept is a new study into Mazda's next-generation 'Kodo' design that the company uses across its model range. Nothing else has been revealed as yet, but the first teaser image appears to show a sleek four door sedan, something that'll fuel speculation about a new RX model.
"Our stand this year marks the beginning of a new era for Mazda," said Kogai
"We will showcase a concept model with the design and technologies that will define a whole new generation of Mazda cars. Among them is SKYACTIV-X, a gasoline engine that realizes a long-held dream of the global automotive industry.”
The Mazda CX-8, the company’s flagship SUV in Japan, will also be on display at the show, appearing alongside a special edition Mazda2, Red Top special edition MX-5 and an updated Mazda MX-5 RF.
The Tokyo Motor Show begins at the end of the month, running from October 28th to November 5th.
