It's common practice these days for car brands to announce they're ditching internal combustion engines for electric power.
But the next-generation Mazda MX-5 won't follow suit.
According to reports, the Mazda MX-5 will survive through to a fifth generation, and it'll have Mazda’s SkyActiv-X engine technology.
The first engine to use this tech was introduced in mid-2019 as a 2.0-litre four-cylinder, which had 132 Kw and 224 Nm torque. Mazda's next range of inline-six engines will use technology that combines spark and compression ignition to improve fuel economy and reduce emissions.
If reports are true, and Mazda does decide to use a SkyActiv-X engine for the fifth-gen MX-5, the car will have to be completely re-engineered and possibly only be sold with one engine option. This would mean the current 1.5-litre entry-level car possibly wouldn't make it past the current generation.
Ikuo Maeda, the guy in charge of Mazda design, has previously said that the brand is considering multiple powertrain options.
“We want to look at the best powertrain to keep the vehicle lightweight, but because of the diversifying requirements and preference, we need to explore various options.”
