Mazda’s best-selling SUV reaches a major milestone.

Mazda’s best-selling SUV reaches a major milestone.

  • Global production and sales of the Mazda CX-5 reached five million units by the end of 2025.
  • CX-5 is Mazda’s most popular SUV, sold in over 100 countries and regions worldwide.
  • The all-new CX-5 launches locally in H2 2026, following European and North American releases.

Mazda’s CX-5 has crossed a major global landmark, with cumulative production and sales now topping five million units worldwide. It’s a tidy achievement for the medium SUV that helped cement Mazda’s modern design and driving philosophy, and it arrives just as an all-new generation prepares to roll out.

The milestone also makes the CX-5 only the third Mazda model to reach five million sales, following the long-running Mazda323 and the Mazda3. Not bad company to keep.

From Hiroshima to everywhere

Since its launch, the CX-5 has grown into Mazda’s most popular crossover SUV, now sold in more than 100 countries and regions. Production began with the first-generation model at Mazda’s Ujina Plant No.2 in Hiroshima, before expanding to Ujina Plant No.1, Hofu Plant and manufacturing facilities in China.

To meet global demand, Mazda has also carried out local assembly in Malaysia and Vietnam. That expanded footprint has helped the CX-5 become the brand’s best-selling model in its current global line-up - a rare case of one vehicle wearing both sales hero and brand ambassador hats.

Eight years on, a clean-sheet rethink

The timing of the five-million milestone is no accident. Mazda unveiled the all-new CX-5 in Europe in July 2025, marking the first full generational overhaul in eight years. According to Mazda, the new model sharpens the CX-5’s sporty design and driving dynamics, while also addressing the everyday realities of family life.

Koichiro Yamaguchi, Program Manager for the CX-5, says the latest version is about evolution rather than reinvention. “The all-new CX-5 has been fully changed in eight years, and further refines its sporty design and driving dynamics,” he said. “Now it offers an even more spacious cabin where all passengers can enjoy comfort and ease.”

Yamaguchi added that a strong focus on daily usability underpins the new model, describing it as “a new-generation SUV that makes driving more comfortable and life itself richer”.

What it means for local buyers

Following its European debut, the all-new CX-5 is scheduled to launch in North America and Japan during the first half of 2026. Local customers won’t be waiting much longer, with Mazda New Zealand confirming the new CX-5 is due to arrive in the second half of the year.

David Hodge, Managing Director of Mazda Motors of New Zealand, says the CX-5’s popularity here mirrors its global success. “Since the first generation launched locally in 2012, the Mazda CX-5 has become a recognisable sight on our roads,” he said. “With over 34,000 sales, the CX-5 has proven itself as a key companion to Mazda owners and their families.”

Mazda has yet to release local pricing or full specifications for the all-new model. DRIVEN Car Guide understands the brand has not disclosed those details yet. What is clear is that five million sales in, the CX-5 isn’t slowing down. It’s lining up for its next act.
