Wrestler-turned-actor John Cena is set to star in an upcoming film based on Mattel's Matchbox Cars toy line.
This announcement comes on the heels of the immense success of Barbie, another Mattel property that grossed nearly US$1.5 billion (NZ$2.3 billion) worldwide in 2023, cementing its place as the highest-grossing film of the year.
Apple Original Films is reportedly producing the Matchbox movie, although a release date has yet to be confirmed.
From toy stores to the silver screen
The Matchbox line of die-cast vehicles was launched in 1953 by automotive enthusiast Jack Odell and quickly became a household name.
Known for their detailed miniature cars, Matchbox toys have long been a staple of childhood. With Cena at the helm of this new cinematic venture, the film promises to reignite nostalgia for those who grew up pushing these miniature cars across carpets and imagining themselves in the driver's seat.
Behind the scenes
A powerhouse team, including David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, Don Granger and Robbie Brenner will produce the film, while Sam Hargrave, director of the Extraction films, is set to direct.

Cena’s involvement in the film seems fitting, given his extensive car collection. This accomplished wrestler is an avid car enthusiast, with a garage that includes classics like a Lamborghini Countach and a Plymouth Superbird, although he prefers to daily-drive a more practical but still potent Honda Civic Type R.
