The Fast & the Furious, or the Fast & the Loud?
Automatic Number Plate Recognition cameras, or ANPR cameras, have been around for quite some time now; capable of reading the plate numbers of passing cars to streamline the ticketing process.
Now in Britain, as part of at testing process, selected ANPR cameras are going to be equipped new noise-detecting technology designed to target the loudest vehicles on the road.
The move comes after an increase in complaints about noise pollution. London in particular is known for its regular supercars invasions. The British Department of Transport has labelled the noise pollution something that “makes the lives of people in communities across Britain an absolute misery.”
Britain's Department of Transport links exposure to illegal levels of noise to increases in heart attacks, high blood pressure, type two diabetes, and stress.
Offending cars that exceed legal noise restrictions and are recorded by the cameras won't be ticketed during the incoming seven-month trial period. Rather, it's considered to be a fact-finding mission for the moment.
If the test is deemed successful, it's expected that the cameras with acoustic functionality will be rolled out nationwide; and possibly spread to other countries.
