Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the GLC 43 Edition R in SUV and coupe form for New Zealand, injecting more visual aggression and performance hardware into its midsize AMG offering.
Limited in availability, the Edition R brings a sharper aesthetic and mechanical enhancements via the AMG Dynamic Plus package.
Edition R dials up AMG aggression
On the outside, it’s distinguished by Night Package II styling cues - dark chrome badging, a gloss black grille and 21-inch matte black Y-spoke alloy wheels. Red brake callipers sit behind those wheels, adding a motorsport edge.
The 'Edition R' badge isn’t just cosmetic. AMG dynamic engine mounts and a new ‘Race’ mode join the existing Sport and Sport+ profiles.
Mercedes-AMG says Race mode unlocks quicker throttle response and a more aggressive transmission calibration for track-style driving.
Functional interior upgrades
Inside, the Edition R swaps standard trim for a suite of model-specific additions. Performance front seats come trimmed in black Artico and Microcut microfibre, highlighted by red contrast stitching and seatbelts. A metal structure dash inlay - exclusive to the Edition R within the GLC line-up - adds a unique tactile element.
The AMG steering wheel is clad in Nappa leather and microfibre, while a Burmester 3D surround system and AMG Real Performance Sound system round out the package.
Familiar mild-hybrid performance
Power comes from the same 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder mild-hybrid petrol engine seen in the standard GLC 43, producing up to 310kW and 500Nm.
The integrated 48V mild hybrid system provides a short burst of 10kW and 150Nm during hard acceleration. Mercedes-Benz claims 0 to 100km/h in 4.8 seconds.
Transmission duties are handled by a 9-speed AMG Speedshifty MCT, supported by rear-axle steering and adaptive AMG Ride Control suspension.
Limited availability and local pricing
Only a limited number of GLC 43 Edition R units will be offered locally. Pricing is set at $146,500 for the SUV and $152,600 for the Coupe.
Paint options include standard finishes like Polar White and Spectral Blue, while Manufaktur options such as Alpine Grey and Patagonia Red come at extra cost.
The Edition R builds on an already well-equipped GLC 43 base, which includes a panoramic sunroof, head-up display, 360-degree camera system, and a full suite of active safety tech.
