When a sedan becomes a canvas.

When a sedan becomes a canvas.

  • Lexus unveils one-off IS 350 designed by artist Alex Alpert at Expo Chicago.
  • Hand-drawn line art transforms the car into a graphic, sketch-like form.
  • Project kicks off a year-long art collaboration across global events.

Lexus has taken a different route with its IS 350, handing the keys, metaphorically at least, to visual artist Alex Alpert. The result is a one-off custom sedan unveiled at Expo Chicago, where the car serves less as transport and more as a moving piece of contemporary art.

This unique build marks the beginning of a year-long collaboration between Lexus and Alpert, with further appearances planned at major cultural events including NYCxDesign and Art Basel.

Lines that reshape the car

Alpert’s signature style defines the project. His hand-drawn-inspired line work traces the seams and contours of the IS 350, visually flattening its three-dimensional surfaces into something more graphic and abstract.

It’s a clever visual trick, as the car almost reads like a sketch brought to life, blurring the boundary between design object and illustration. The motifs also nod to broader themes, including car culture, craftsmanship and lifestyle influences.

Inside the design, there’s more going on than first impressions suggest. The custom hood artwork incorporates symbolic references tied to Lexus values and Japanese heritage, including cues around precision, hospitality and performance.

More than a one-off moment

While this particular IS 350 won’t be heading into production, it signals a broader direction. Lexus is positioning the model as a platform that can move beyond traditional automotive boundaries into art, design and cultural expression.

“With this collaboration, we wanted to reimagine the Lexus IS 350 as not just a performance sedan, but as a cultural expression of design and creativity,” said Sam Wintermyer, General Manager of Lexus Marketing.

Alpert sees it similarly from the artist’s side: “With Lexus, the vehicle becomes both canvas and platform – a way to bring the creative process directly into these cultural moments.”

Mobile art, in the metal

This isn’t the first time a car has doubled as art, but the IS 350’s execution leans more towards subtle reinterpretation than loud statement.

The lines follow the car’s natural form rather than overpower it, giving the impression that the design was always there, just waiting to be revealed.

As collaborations between automotive brands and artists become more common, projects like this hint at where things could head next, not just limited editions, but vehicles that act as platforms for storytelling beyond the road.
