What does an extra $20k get you? A fancy copper roof, for a start.

Following on from its Discovery-range update (read our D350 review here), Land Rover New Zealand will introduce a new flagship model in November: the Tempest.

The name is a nod to the "Tempest" code-name of the development launch programme for the second-generation Discovery, which was launched in 1998.

At $184,990, Tempest will be $20k more expensive than the Discovery D350 Dynamic HSE with the same engine.

A contrasting Petra Copper Gloss roof finish is standard – the first time this roof colour has been available on Discovery – with Narvik Gloss Black available as an option. There's also Petra Copper Gloss finish for exterior design details, including the the wing vent, Discovery script and lower bumper inserts.

Tempest adds more luxury to the 7-seat Discovery, says Land Rover.

The 22‑inch Diamond Turned Style alloy wheel design has Petra Copper tinted lacquer and Gloss Black detailing – a new finish for Discovery and exclusive to Tempest.

The Tempest is further identified by unique badging for the B-pillars, treadplates, puddle lamps and interior finishers. The cabin has Shadow Aluminium detailing, and extended Ebony Windsor leather upholstery.

The Discovery lineup now offers "curated accessory packs", essentially a bundle of options designed for specific scenarios: Beach Days, Road Trip and Snow Days.

Beach Days includes a collapsible organiser for the load area, bespoke sunshades for the tailgate/rear windows, a roof rack, and rubber mats.

Beach Days pack will be more relevant when Tempest arrives in November.

For the Road Trip pack there are two seat organisers, a centre armrest cooler and an electric cool bag. Cross bars and a roof box bring extra luggage capacity, while wind deflectors are also fitted.

Snow Days includes cross bars for the standard roof rails, a tailored rubber loadspace mat, mudflaps and a "snow traction" system (they're kind of posh semi-chains, see them in the gallery below).

Snow Days seems right for NZ right now: all packs available on all Discoveries.

Land Rover says the three new packs have been introduced following the success of the existing For Dogs and Biking Adventures packs.

For Dogs includes a foldable pet carrier, portable rinse system, spill-resistant water bowl and quilted load space liner.

For Dogs curated accessory pack has gone down well with doggo-Disco people.

Biking Adventures features antimicrobial deep-sided rubber mats, mud flaps front and rear and side steps that help to reach the roof mounted cycle carrier and roof cross bars. For those who don’t want a roof-mounted cycle carrier, a two-bike tow bar-mounted carrier is available.
