JOSH MCKENZIE STARS IN TV2’S FILTHY RICH. HIS CHARACTER JOHN JUNIOR DRIVES A LAMBORGHINI HURACAN
So you get to drive a Lamborghini Huracan for the Filthy Rich series?
Yes, a black 2015 Lamborghini Huracan. It is so easy to drive. It is similar to the one in the photo which is a 2015, lime green, paddle-shift, seven-speed, double-clutch gearbox, and was supplied by the awesome team at Independent Prestige.
Why this car? How does it suit your character?
It suits the character and the show — extreme and ostentatious. I like how blatantly showy it is for the character. The car, while extreme in styling and performance, is easy to drive on a day-to-day basis. It turns heads wherever you go. The exhaust is just so cool, especially on the overrun when it bangs and pops. And you can tone this down by flicking the switch from Sport to Strada (street) mode.
What do you drive in real life? And how does it feel changing from the show car to yours?
A VW Golf. It certainly gets fewer stares. It’s like changing from a rock star to private schoolgirl.
What was the first car you owned?
A Volvo 440, old-school. I bought it from my grandma, so that says it all.
Your dream car …
A Land Rover Defender at this stage. It is hugely practical and effortlessly cool. My dream car is ever-changing, though.
Who taught you to drive?
A mate of mine and my dad. Do you prefer manual or automatic?
Manual is more fun and feels more like driving. Auto is far more relaxed. Nothing beats cruise control on a road trip.
Most memorable road trip?
A couple of New Year’s trips — one around the central North Island with my buddy and a tent. Another one for work at Rhythm and Vines (musical festival in Gisborne). Our job was to drive down in these crazy vehicles and throw parties on the way. And to participate in said parties.
If you could go anywhere in the world in any car with any actor?
Nurse Kylie from Shortland Street (Kerry-Lee Dewing), in an old Shelby AC Cobra through Europe.
Do you enjoy driving or would you rather be a passenger?
I enjoy driving but every now and again it’s nice to be driven.
Technology in cars … do you embrace it or do you prefer old school? Can you see yourself buying a driverless car?
I can see the appeal in both to be honest. I can’t see myself buying a driverless at this stage, though.
What do you always have in your car?
My deodorant, a book, skateboard, tomato sauce and a towel. Isn’t it obvious why?
What irritates you most about other drivers?
Excessive road rage and hesitation.
